What i learned
In my first draft the rules of the Journalism Associated Press style slipped from my mind. I would've cut myself a little slack had I just used the normal MLA format, the format we use in English class, but no, I skipped rules all together. This article refreshed my memory on some of the basic guidelines of Journalism. I will remember, books and movies are always in quotation marks!

The American Youth Soccer Organization has been raising money to replace the real grass with artificial grass called Astroturf on ________ Soccer Field in ________. I feel is a necessary technological advancement that will enhance our childhood fun and provide a suitable environment for us to play in.
While the city is trying their best to keep the field in fair condition, one can always count on _______ Field to provide patches of yellowing grass among the dirt, and on rainy days, an abundance of mud puddles that make it impossible to play on, resulting in a canceled game and sad children. The field is overall uncomfortable to play in, and on an uneven surface, kids can twist their ankles. _______ Field soaks up endless amounts of water to take care of weeds on dirt. Astroturf stays clean through all weather conditions and wastes no water.
The main reason most kids are opposed to this idea is because when people fall on Astroturf, they slide and end up with scraped knees or elbows. That is true, but most will agree that it doesn't take a genius to know that falling hurts. No matter what kids fall on, it's going to be painful. If people are too afraid of getting hurt, they shouldn't be playing sports in the first place. Also, the cost of the renovations being planned total a whopping $800,000. However, with Astroturf, the water bill will stop being so high. Not only is the city paying for Astroturf, they're paying for our happiness.
Since the good outweighs the bad by far, I think Astroturf at ______ Soccer Field is an amazing idea.

What i learned
I learned that in an Opinions article, you don't need to use first person, I, me, my, etc. Phrases like I think or I feel are unnecessary. For example, the sentence I think red is the best color means the same thing as red is the best color. In addition to unnecessary, first person phrases like that make things sound more tentative, when the point of my Opinions article is to change people's perspectives.

On April 22, 2013, Earth Day was recognized as a day to give back to the community and improve the environment.
Before 1970, dumping in bodies of water, polluting the air, and littering were not considered an offense. Actually, they were common practices until people started hosting rallies for the protection of the environment. One man in particular was extremely concerned. After years of spreading his environmental ideas, Senator Gaylord Nelson founded Earth Day. He was rewarded with the Presidential Medal of Freedom.

Donald Sterling, owner of the Los Angeles Clippers basketball franchise, was caught on tape telling his girlfriend, V. Stiviano, not to be seen in public with African American people. The tape was first released onto online sites TMZ and Deadspin.
As a result of his blatant racism, the National Basketball Association banned Sterling for life from all aspects of the NBA and fined him $2.5 million. The NBA's fast and severe punishment was met with applause and approval from most involved in the league.
Sterling created such a large controversy because 77% of the players in the NBA are black, and having a racist authority figure creates a conflict of interest.
Eighth-grader _______ says, "It's important to note that his lifetime ban from the NBA is also a symbolic gesture, a precedent likened to those set in the Supreme Court, that the NBA will have to follow from now on. This is why Donald Sterling's remarks have become such a big deal, because his banning represents the NBA's stance on racism." Furthermore, she makes the point, "Sports have long been a place for racial reform... having a major sports organization like the NBA condemn racism so harshly represents a shift in the way Americans will not tolerate racism."

PASSING OUT OVER PASSING PERIODS FIRST DRAFT
2014
OPINIONS - FIFTH GRADE ISSUE
One entirely new concept in middle school is switching classes and the necessity of having a passing period, the time allotted to students to get from one class to the next.
On regular days, minimum days, and late start days, students have five minutes to switch classes. Because _______'s campus is bigger than incoming sixth-graders are used to having, having only five minutes to get from one side of the school to the complete opposite side can be a daunting task. However, there is more than enough time to be prepared to learn, especially as the school year progresses and schedules are known better than the back of one's own hand. In fact, students often use spare minutes to chat with friends in the hallways, go to the bathroom, or ask a teacher a question.
Sixth-grader ________ said, "At first I was scared [of being late] because I didn't know where the classes were, but there is always just enough time to get to my next class."
When students are caught off-guard wandering the hallways when the bell rings, their teachers give them a tardy when they reach their next class. If students get three tardies in one trimester, they are issued a detention. This punishment is set to prevent misbehaving kids from lollygagging around the campus, not to frighten students who are new to the system of passing periods. As long as newcomers are careful, there is no reason to fret over the unlikely possibility of detentions for being late.

Since this article was an opinions article in the issue we send to fifth-graders, it isn't the best idea to break out all the stops in my vocabulary or sentence structure. Some audiences need short, simple, clear. However, I didn't get rid of all of my fancy wording or strong sentences. Kids also need to be challenged, and the fifth-graders should read the article wanting to be a part of a class promoting strong writing or part of a school that encourages writing growth.

(I have only final drafts for the next articles because I failed to save the first drafts. We use google drive, so edits are typed directly on top of the old.) (Also, I added some tags to help understand the gist of my article, as so many things had to be screened out. I try to relate my articles to school, local, state, and sometimes nation, when it applies, to keep it relevant to my readers, so a lot of wording had to be blocked. SORRY!)
In this article, I remember focusing on my angle. I wanted to show sixth-graders and seventh-graders some of the awesome activities the STEM class does because not many students know. When most twelve-year-olds hear science, technology, engineering, and math together they think why would I pick all of this extra work for an elective, my fun class. By reporting on one of the (in my opinion) greatest field trips ever (I may have been in STEM before), I showed the percentage of people that possibly read my article that STEM isn't just boring learning, that the class learns through having fun, too.

WHAT I LEARNED
I know, it's an extremely short article, what could I have possibly learned? On the paper, there is a definite need of contingencies. For example, when a person doesn't get their article done on time, it is reassigned to another journalist. At that point the article usually gets done. When it does not, it makes the person who has to pick up the slack at the last minute extremely unhappy, one might use the word livid, even. Alright, watch out, big reveal coming. . . that is the story of this choir article and I am the [previously] unhappy person stuck writing it during production week. I could've assigned it to someone else, but after trying that route twice, I decided to go with a person who I knew would do it, me. I also learned that an interview can be used to glean information about the topic, rather than just get quotes about opinions. Ha! Even the "what I learned" section is longer than the actual article that took so long to get written.

I may have learned more strategies towards improving my P.E. grade than my journalism skills on this one. Although, I did continue to practice using opinionated words and phrases to convey a point, especially an opinion, more clearly, which is always nice. That skill comes in handy when writing literary analysis for English, and, obviously, writing opinion articles. It can also be a helpful skill when writing News or Features, just because I am able to recognize more clearly the words that I need to take out to leave an unbiased imprint on my reader.
