Why the change?
I cropped this photo so it would fit in the allotted space in the paper. Also, since the paper is in black and white, the light source originally coming in from the right side of the image would've caused confusion because people wouldn't be able to tell what it was. I also took out some of the trees in the background because the photograph isn't supposed to feature those attention-grabbing trees. When they're taken out of the photo, the attention shifts back to the barren soccer field.

The added brightness gives the photo more life. The second photo makes the image stand out more, while the first one is easily overlooked. The different lighting and enhanced color change the tone of the picture. The first one is just a bit dull while the second one is fabulous. If you don't think so (and even if you do), stare at it for a little while, please. Just the second one. After about a minute, look back at the first one. I promise after doing this, you will be able to see how much the change helps. The photo literally pales in comparison. This is the photo I submitted to the literary magazine. While I much would've rather submitted the second one, I choose the first one. It was a photography contest so I wasn't sure if altering the image with a computer would've been cheating, so I played it safe.

WHY THE CHANGE?
This artwork was created for my English project, the same one featured in the Other Writing Samples tab of this website. I thought my original artwork captured on film looked to bland to display. I stared fooling around with the lighting and took a picture of the inverted version. After narrowing down my options to four choices, I decided to just have them all! This greedy reason led to a more interesting version of my old picture, one more exciting to look at.

Upon looking at last year's wretched photo of the blindingly magenta flower, I decided to take showcase another edited flower, to show that I was mentally competent of seeing beauty. (Last year's flower was so atrocious I made a new tab on my website just for redemption.) Originally, I planned to submit one of the two after pictures to the literary magazine, only to devastatingly realize the theme was vibrant, and I had sucked the original color out of the picture. Now that it is not a literary magazine submission, it probably doesn't belong on this tab of my website because it has nothing to do with school. However, I think the edits are wonderful and belong on this page. A very pretty rose, the original photo was interesting, but I couldn't help thinking that the pee shade yellow and terrorizing pink don't match. I love just the drain of color in the first edited picture, how the deep pink brings out the startlingly white contrast. I chose to put the second photo on my website because I love the varying shades of red on the petals, how the edges are burgundy, followed by scarlet, then a shallow red. OOOLALA! Aren't they gorgeous?!

Alright so it's pretty obvious why I cropped the photo. No one wants to see the backs of a bunch of parent's heads. Also, the interesting landscape shape made for a cool, unique front page of our last issue. Using InDesign for the first time, I switched around some items on the page to create a spot for this photo that wrapped all of the way across the bottom of the page. This way, you could see the students' faces.

Between the before and after photos I enhanced the coloring. Since the paper comes out in black, and white, it is sometimes hard to see the different shades of gray. In a paler photo the grays look more alike, but adding brightness increases the gap between the shades of color. I also cropped out a kid's head in the back because he kind of drew focus away from the activity by doing something out of uniform.

I haven't submitted these photos yet for the paper because I took them this month for the final issue of the 2013-2014 Riptide Reader. Since it may be chosen to go in the paper, I cropped out her legs and her dress-code worthy short shorts. My favorite part of this picture is the angle, which is even more exaggerated by cropping the bottom to meet at the corner of the desk.

This is an awesome student photograph, right? Yeah, I'm right. My pet project was to have a side of the centerspread dedicated to student photos of halloween costumes. Believe it or not, this photo didn't get published; I got outranked. I'll spare you the gory details, so in short, pictures of a friend got a picture in the paper instead. I cropped this photo so it could focus as much on the waldos as possible, and also to get rid of the photobomber, also a journalism peer of mine. Although why he would photobomb a picture I was trying to use for the paper I don't know.

Speaking of photos of friends... but really, I couldn't get a picture of all of the honor roll students because of the sheer number of them. If I took a photo of all of the bleachers, the people would've been too tiny to make out. It was a little too crazy on the right side of the photo, with hands flying all over the place. It was fun, but in a tiny, pixelated, black-and-white, photo space on the paper, no one would've been able to make out those faces.

Well, I only cropped this one out of courtesy. The girl leaning back and staring anxiously at the camera obviously did not want to be a part of the paper. On a side note, I've noticed that a lot of people actually don't want to be in the paper.

I don't know what happened to the first one exactly. I think I may have been in poor lighting? Anyway, I changed the brightness on the after photo to make it easily distinguished in black-and-white. Plus, it looks nicer in color too. I kept the top part of the background because I think it's a really pretty shot of our school. The nice, pale buildings, the palm tree, the blue sky, the perfect background for Laker girls! Of course, if the space needed it cropped, it would go without a moment's hesitation.
